killing heidi

And, with that short break in consistency, expect very regular posts once again. I promise this time.

Funny how I've had all holiday break to post something, anything, and I choose the first couple weeks back at senior high school just as it is starting to get unbearably stressful and ridiculously busy to start committing to this. Huh.

Black Biro with a bit of Acrylic Paint, Glouache Paper. Which I highly recommend by the way, love the outcome of the texture.

NEW START 2013: so far - painting with coffee.

I've actually been pretty busy lately, more than I thought I would be on the holidays. Anyway, I recently got a request from a friend to do a drawing for her. Usually I don't do many requests, especially if they're from people I'm not that familiar with or it's something I don't particularly want to draw, but they were a close friend so I said I'd take a look. She sent through a photo of a model you guys might know of.. Cara Delevingne? It was actually a photo I thought would be heaps of fun to draw, I just had no idea how to go about doing it. I started sketching her, then started again, then more sketching, then more erasing. Then another attempt, and another starting again. Just when I was about to give up I tried adding colour, cause I thought that's what was missing. I was sorta right. I did the eyes and the lips with ballpoint, pretty much the only coloured medium I'm confident and comfortable with. I had absolutely no idea how to do the skin colour, or the hair. I never do when drawing people. It is near impossible to sketch skin with pens (well, the tools I have) and it was way to hard, so I didn't even bother trying. Then I remembered about how people need to get out of their comfort zone more, express themselves in ways they're not accustomed to. I think I learnt it from watching The Voice or something, but I guess the application is universal. I hate paint, I love the effect it can have and how well it turns out and I have so much respect for artists who use it brilliantly, but it's not for me. Didn't know and still don't know how I came up with the idea at the time, but I thought I'd have a go at using coffee to paint with. I loved the affect so much. I hope it turned out alright.
Morals of today's rant; don't give up, and try getting out of your comfort zone once in a while. Revolutionary, I know.

edm challenges #1- #6

edm challenges #1 - 6

So I started the EDM (everyday matters, for those of you who don't know) Challenges. I've never really wanted to get into them, seeing as there's over three hundred of them and I didn't want to get committed to something that serious so soon. I mean, we just met. That was a horrible joke, wow. Anyway, I was introduced to them by other blogs that I follow, the magnificent works of andrea joseph and france belleville for example, and noticed that many respectible sketchers and doodlers have contributed to this tradition. I looked back in my moleskine and realised that I could just keep them all there (I had the fear that if they weren't all together in one place that I'd completely forget about them after a while). So here is the first page in the back of my moleskine, edm challenges one through six.

front cover of my moleskine,
vintage japanese postage stamps.
But in an attempt to add some colour to the blog, because it has recently been fairly black and white, here is a scanned photo of the front of my small black moleskine. A while ago my japanese teacher gave me a bunch of vintage japanese postage stamps. They were sitting around for a while doing nothing because I had no idea what to do with them, until I realised that I didn't want my moleskine so dull and unoriginal anymore. I wanted to personalise it, then I found the stamps, and they were perfect.

'i don't want to be alone, i want to be left alone'

Audrey Hepburn is one of my favourite people to draw. She always had such an expressive face and the composition in her photos was always beautiful. The black and the white and the way it contrasts within her hair and her eyes and smile and clothes always make me want to draw any photos I see of her. I think I may be a little addicted to drawing her, judging by the fact this is the seventh Audrey Hepburn sketch this year. Totally worth it. This one was just done in black biro, and I think I may have used some pitt artist pens for rendering but I don't even remember. The scan doesn't show it very well, but the thing I love about this is how much more genuine the yellow paper of the moleskine sketchbook makes it look. Anyway, this is a pretty basic drawing of one my favourite actresses from that era. Love you Audrey

my favourite footwear

Thought I may as well upload this one. This is, as you can see, the image of the background of the banner. It's just drawn with some blue biros (and a hint of green). It was drawn on a canvas about A4, given to me by a good friend (cheers ribena!) in a pack of about five, which was brilliant because I never get the opportunity to draw on anything fancier than my trusty moleskine. I have so many sketches of shoes, and I'm actually in the middle of drawing one now.

But here's another one. I'm pretty sure that on all five of my canvases I drew shoes. They will also all probably get uploaded sometime soon, as I have many many pictures in my archives. But before I actually have to do anything new, and can rely on my vast resources of previously scanned sketches, here is another one of said shoes. This one's an actual converse, I don't even think it's mine, I might've stolen it from my cousin... oh well. It too was drawn in just a biro, green this time, obviously, and the laces in pencil. (click the images to view larger) Cheers for reading and I'll be back in another couple days.

uninspired as of yet

Trying to find inspiration, knowing it's there but not quite being able to tap into it yet, most frustrating thing... it will come, it always does. But for now, I leave you with the before image of my favourite transformation; blank paper.

butterflies

Already addicted to blogging and I've only made one post so far. Well, I already know there will be many more to expect.. anyway, so my blog doesn't look so desperately boring at the moment, another photo from the archives, mid drawing through a sketch I conceived in geography class. & yes,  I will get around to posting the full thing another day. For now, I hope this will do.

first blog post.

Inspired by the fantastic blogs of two of my favourite artists, andrea joseph, france belleville & melissa tubbs, I decided to creat my own blog. First post, yew! Basically it will feature my sketches and drawings and the rest of my creative products. Being an amateur and all, i had absolutely no idea as for what to post, or how to post it, but I figured it out eventually, so here is an old edit I did of me back when i was discovering how much fun I could have with photography apps.
